Early Years Foundation Stage

Children on bench

The first stage of learning is called the Early Years Foundation (EYFS). It begins when children enter Nursery and continues until the end of the Reception year. The EYFS underpins all future learning by supporting and fostering the children’s personal, social and emotional well-being. It encourages positive attitudes and dispositions and a curiosity to learn. The Foundation Stage is divided into the following areas of learning:

Prime Areas:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (including Religious Education): making friends, sharing, following classroom routines and taking turns.

Communication and Language: speaking and listening, developing own narratives and extending vocabulary.

Physical Development: keeping healthy, moving in a range of ways and developing fine and gross motor skills.

Specific Areas:

Literacy: linking sounds to letters, enjoying reading books and mark making.

Mathematical Development: shape and patterns, counting and number rhymes.

Knowledge and Understanding: investigating and exploring, using ICT for different purposes and construction.

Expressive Arts and Design: music and dance, painting and collages and imaginative play.

At Saint Patrick’s we provide an environment which is happy, warm, secure and stimulating. Enabling environments promote a strong sense of self whilst developing the children’s ability to play, negotiate and cooperate with others. Our creative curriculum is inspired by pupils’ interests and enables all children to become confident and independe nt learners who enjoy exploring and acquiring new skills. High quality teaching, including input from music, art and drama specialists, ensures that all pupils realise their God given potential and have their individual needs met. Regular opportunities for talk and performance encourage children to share and celebrate these talents with their peers, families and the wider community. We fully involve parents as their child’s first educators – look out for our regular parent reading sessions, open lessons and sharing mornings in our school newsletter!
